AP Bias Strikes Again
The AP is really showing their bias again, except this time, they have been caught in the act.
Sharp eyed posters over at Free Republic spotted this story about the president's reaction (version #1) to news of Bill Clinton's upcoming surgery:
Needless to say, there was massive outrage. Many on the thread had listened to the speech live and heard no boos at all and were screaming liberal media bias...and rightfully so. Others e-mailed the AP to express their displeasure. So, minutes later, a new version gets posted to the same yahoo link and another thread pops up on Free Republic:
Of course, someone with access to the raw wire posted this as well to archive this monumental, and perhaps intentional screw up.
Someone at the Associated Press has some major explaining to do.
UPDATE: Just so there is no doubt, a Freeper posted a screen capture:
UPDATE #2: Boston.com still has the first version up on their site.
UPDATE#3: Another Freeper who attended the rally checks in.
UPDATE:#5: Country Store has links to the original AP stories up now...so that the rewriting of history won't go unnoticed. Also, I been getting a ton of hits via Instapundit. (thanks again, Glenn) Drudge is also working on this as well and has linked to a transcript of the speech:
UPDATE#6: "If at first you deceive, spin, spin again" seems to be the AP motto today. There is now yet another version posted that appears to try to cover for the original screw up:
UPDATE#7: Blogger Tom McMahon said that Mark Belling of WISN radio reported that Scott Lindlaw was the AP reporter responsible for this false story. Instapundit reveals that his work has been seen "previously with distorted reports of Bush visits to military bases and NASCAR races -- the latter of which got characterized as a "cheap shot" by the Columbia Journalism Review." Here's a RealAudio file of the entire speech.
UPDATE #8: This media virus has now infected the Knight-Ridder wire as well. It's in the last graph. A Freeper living abroad also reports that "the BBC is reporting the booing like it is the honest truth, complete with appalled faces on the anchor and the reporter. Really shows you how the media bias works. IT IS ALL LIES..." Who knows what form it will take in tomorrow's papers. Stay tuned.
UPDATE #9: Instapundit has an update on this and states that the false story is not by Scott Lindlaw, as earlier reported, but by Tom Hays, who is exposed by the Galley Slaves, as they point to Lexis-Nexis for the real source. Meanwhile, Powerline has coverage of how far the media virus had spread since the net and the wires were infected by this bogus story early this afternoon:
And one final comment from the Captain's Quarters:

UPDATE#3: Another Freeper who attended the rally checks in.
I wouldn't have posted this as a separate topic until I heard on the radio on the way home from the rally that the AP had reported the crowd booed when it was announced that the former president had been hospitalized. That is a bold faced lie. I understand it was later retracted, but that's like unringing a bell. I do not think it was in error, either, since the writer further stated that 'Bush did nothing to stop them.' Shameful.UPDATE#4: Some of our comments are featuring posts from liberal bloggers who are taking the first version of the AP story at face value. However, another reader has provided a sound clip of the quote in question: Judge for yourself.
The rally was amazing. I don't know how many were in attendance, but the crowd could not have been more enthusiastic.
UPDATE:#5: Country Store has links to the original AP stories up now...so that the rewriting of history won't go unnoticed. Also, I been getting a ton of hits via Instapundit. (thanks again, Glenn) Drudge is also working on this as well and has linked to a transcript of the speech:
...and before I talk to you about why I want to be your President for four more years, I do want to address several situations in the news that call for our concern and prayers.I posted this in the comments, but feel it is worthy to say here as well: Given the overwhelming earwitness accounts via TV and radio plus an eyewitness who actually ATTENDED the rally, I'm going to have to say that the AP screwed the pooch again. They GOT CAUGHT and RETRACTED IT. It's not the first time this has happened, either. The shame is, the damage has already been done. The first version of the story is all over the wires and has been reposted to many a left wing blog and message board. There is no telling how many papers were on deadline this afternoon and were going to press before everyone heads out for the Labor Day weekend. If this makes any print edition (and probably will) and is not followed up by a full retraction, there could be major credibility trouble ahead for the Associated Press.
En route here we just received news that President Clinton has been hospitalized in New York. He is in our thoughts and prayers. We send him our best wishes for a swift and speedy recovery. (Applause.)
UPDATE#6: "If at first you deceive, spin, spin again" seems to be the AP motto today. There is now yet another version posted that appears to try to cover for the original screw up:
WEST ALLIS, Wis. - President Bush on Friday offered former President Bill Clinton, who faces heart bypass surgery, "best wishes for a swift and speedy recovery."Far too late for that now, don't you think? Because WNBC-TV via MSNBC has an "audience is booing version" of the story on their site. How many hits do you think they get? And how many people will this false story be forwarded to? The damage has been done.
"He is in our thoughts and prayers," Bush said at a campaign rally in Wisconsin.
The crowd reacted with applause and with some "ooohs," apparently surprised by the news that Clinton was ill.
UPDATE#7: Blogger Tom McMahon said that Mark Belling of WISN radio reported that Scott Lindlaw was the AP reporter responsible for this false story. Instapundit reveals that his work has been seen "previously with distorted reports of Bush visits to military bases and NASCAR races -- the latter of which got characterized as a "cheap shot" by the Columbia Journalism Review." Meanwhile, Powerline has coverage of how far the media virus had spread since the net and the wires were infected by this bogus story early this afternoon:
The AP's lie is spreading rapidly around the globe. Salon says: "Audience boos as Bush offers best wishes for Clinton's recovery." WSTM television in New York has a slightly different version of the story, with an AP copyright, which says: "Many in Bush's audience booed when Clinton's name was mentioned. The president made no comment on that and continued with his rally speech." WRIC television in northern Virginia has the same "many booed" story. In Iowa, KWWL television reports that "Many in Bush's audience booed when Clinton's name was mentioned. The president made no comment on that and continued with his rally speech." The same misinformation is being promulgated in Georgia, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, California, Tennessee, Indiana, the Carolinas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio, Minnesota, and New York again.UPDATE#10: One final note and I'm calling it a night, It seems that the Yahoo links above that showed the first versions of this story have all been pulled. As if that will do them any good. It's all over the Blogsphere now and spreading like wildfire. I fully expect the fine folks at the Media Research Center to pick this up. It will be a real surprise if Howard Kurtz does, however. Editor and Publisher has posted a piece on it.
And one final comment from the Captain's Quarters:
We've been used to the press reporting selectively on issues in order to make John Kerry look good and George Bush look bad. We've watched while the press ignored the Christmas in Cambodia mythology that Kerry spewed for three decades until the blogosphere finally forced them to report it. We've sat back and fumed while the press has made excuse after excuse for Kerry's collapsing campaign during this past month.
But this is far too outrageous for people to sit quietly by. It's one thing to report selectively; it's something completely different to write fiction and pass it off as news. The Associated Press has apparently decided to trade in its credibility with news readers and media sources in order to libel George Bush and a group of people who reacted in a most human and sympathetic fashion to the news of a political opponent's ill health.
In the immortal words of Stan Lee...."'Nuff said."

The Yahoo message thread is now going on and on about the generous media censoring itself by no longer running that initial account! I can't believe this, but I can't manage to post to the Yahoo message board at the moment, either.

I would love to hear/see this part of the speech. Any ideas as to where it could be found??
I don't know, Zee. The folks at FR all were listening to it and then the AP filed their story. I'm sure it will be aired tonight on C-SPAN like they usually do.

Who wrote the original, and when are they going to get fired for making things up that never happened?
I really hope this gets exposed nationally, if it is indeed a fraud. I noticed Reuters didn't even mention any "booing" in their report and they'd be on the front lines of reporting it if it really happened, IMO. Something's really fishy here.

THEN RETRACTS... AUDIO REVEALS LOUD CHEERS FOR EX-PREZ... DEVELOPING...

I just listened to the clip, and I can sorta see what led to that story. When Bush said "We send him our prayers for a swift and speedy recovery," there's applause, cheers, and an "OOOOOOH!" sound from the crowd. That could be booing, but more likely it's something like "Whoo-hoo!", in approval of Bush's comment.
Lesson: whenever possible, check the primary sources. And be careful about jumping to conclusions.

Stephen, people are going to hear what goes along with their perceptions. Some people hear voices. Given the overwelming earwitness accounts via TV and radio plus an eyewitness who actually ATTENDED the rally, I'm going to have to say that the AP screwed the pooch again. They GOT CAUGHT and RETRACTED IT. It's not the first time this has happened, either. The shame is, the damage has already been done. I don't know if it's serious or not, but someone on Fark.com (which just noted the AP's retraction) wrote, "just like these conservatives to cheer when they heard Clinton had a heart attack."

They are about to disclose the name of the reporter who started this ugly lie on WISN radio in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. You can hear the show here: http://www.newstalk1130.com/streaming.html

Well its good to hear that Jason Blair found work again. Must be one of the 144,000 new hires.
Local AP honcho LEE HUGHES is refusing to release the name of the reporter who started the lie. WISN has given out the phone number of the local AP office. Please call and ask them to release the name of the reporter 414-225-3580
This is one of the most egregious examples of media bias I have ever seen. If you don't believe in media bias against Republicans after this, nothing will convince you. I saw and heard the President's announcement and the crowd's reaction live on Fox, and I can attest that there was no semblance of booing. Listen to the clip yourself; this is the most bald faced lie I have ever witnessed and it should not go unpunished or unnoticed.
Publicus In New Orleans
BBC World Service played the clip (no boos) and then inexplicably discussed the crowd booing and speculated how this mean-spiritedness would reflect on the President. This is 1984-level self-delusion.
Ghost of a flea
I don't see why the Repugnicans should get flak for booing Clinton. That is to be expected of assholes...
As of 5:57 pm Central, a report of some of the crowd booing report is still up on MSNBC:

" I don't see why the Repugnicans should get flak for booing Clinton. That is to be expected of assholes..."
OK, we get your point - Clinton is an asshole :-;
Fortunately have more class then the "asshole"'s followers, so they cheered Clinton instead.
If Al Gore had realized that the internet would be used for "good", would he still have invented it?
Blogger Tom McMahon said that Mark Belling of WISN radio reported that Scott Lindlaw was the AP reporter responsible for this false story.
RealAudio file of the entire speech
You mean they booed before they didn't?...
Please note:
THERE HAS BEEN NO RETRACTION.
A retraction is contrite, a disavowal.
All we have so far is REDACTION.
Check out this link from someone who was AT that rally!

AP is a sham as a news organization. I too was at the rally this morning. It is in my home town and AP's comment has damage the image of over 60,000 people. There were about 20,000 people in attendance when W mentioned Clinton and there was not a singel boo to be heard. Whoever this reporter is should be fired as Jason Blair was for making up stories and passing them off as real. Disgusting.
I think Scott Lindlaw should be hunted down and given a big "Kenneth, What Is The Frequency?" - if ya know what I mean...
It's time for a Blog Swarm. The only way to deal with media poisoning like this is with repeated dosings of the Castor Oil of Truth (heh): large scale, all-fronts, spontaneous counter messaging.
I've just written letters to all my local papers on this subject, as well as blogged a demand for an investigation. If bloggers everywhere were to do the same thing—send an email to the editors of three newspapers and post a demand for investigation on their own site—we'll generate a lot of noise. Blogging alone is not enough, though.
Next stop, I'm hitting the talk-show phones. You're free to join me.

I posted the mp3 file above (the one that Drudge linked to). Hi, I'm the guy who said: "I don't see why the Repugnicans should get flak for booing Clinton. That is to be expected of assholes..."
Heh. Anyway, I listened to the mp3 and saw the video, and heard no booing at all, not one. Talk about role reversal: Republicans get a heart and Clinton loses his! Throw tomatoes this way.
Okay, this is a bit odd. I can't hear any boos in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel RealAudio (the excerpt in question is at about 3:30, and is duplicated here as provided by a commenter above.)
The same commenter provided a clip of the speech as played on Fox. The quality of the sound here is different and perhaps Fox was using a different microphone than the Journal-Sentinel. There might be some boos mixed in with the first second of the applause *at most*, but the rest is just pure applause. And there's absolutely NO WAY "thousands" booed.
We've posted a video of the crowd response over here:http://www.dailyrecycler.com/blog/2004/09/bloggers-bust-ap-no-booing-at-bush.html
I suppose we will expect the correction to appear in all the duped media outlets on.... Tuesday!
You really have to question the timing of this non-story.
Anga
Boy, you wingnuts are whiny little bitches, aren't you?
Do you think that anyone is going to believe a bunch of right-wing moonbats like Freepers? Give me a break.
Why don't you anti-American extremists stop looking for conspiracy theories under every rock and start acknowledging the fact that your ideology is not only incompatible with America's history but antithetical to common sense and common decency?
Your shrill, paranoic cries of "media bias" make you look like simpletons--but since you're wingnuts, I guess that's appropriate.

Well, SMD...since Editor and Publisher, America's Oldest Journal Covering the Newspaper Industry, has posted a piece on it at:
http://www.mediainfo.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000624935
I'd have to say that's a yes. Nice try, though.
SMD, try listening to the audio and watching the video. There are no boos.
You're dishonest and a partisan hack (I've read your writing, time to grow up). You have no credibility because you refuse the truth.
You are absolutuely right about the media being perverted and flinging an agenda!
http://www.sfbg.com/38/49/cover_censored.html
Hello, "Rethuglican assholes" guy here again. I would disagree with the "Freepers are assholes" guy. I mean, you can't help but say there is a media bias at the AP, just like there is with the major networks and especially Fox News.
But the AP gaffe was over the top, and it does hurt their credibility, if some rabble rousers like Fox News get ahold of it.
However, the bias of the Freepers is 100 times more strident than Fox News or Cnn or the major networks. It is more of a paranoid justification bias, in which they can justify their own biases by comparing it to perceived bias in the main stream "liberal" media.
I personally think only the conservative choir cares about this, and it will be a non-story by Monday.
I was gonna take back my "Repuke-nicans are assholes" comment, but after checking out the Freepers at FreeRepublic.com, I might want to reconsider. :)
I keep seeing that the AP has "retracted" this story. When you "retract" something, you say words to the effect that "we were wrong in reporting that...". They have not retracted anything that I have seen, merely changed the wording of the story once they were caught, and now again to make it seem a plausible as a mistake (booo => ooooh). That's no retraction folks: that's emergency damage control, followed by a carefully contrived re-spin.
Not an American, but how well does this synch up to the whole Paul Wellstone memorial event that caused people some problems a wee while ago?
I don't think there is any comparing the two events. The Wellstone thing was a disgracful display of politics...turning a funeral into a campaign rally...everyone was disgusted by it. This, on the other hand is a different story. Bush wished a political enemy good wishes and good health...and the AP flat out lied about it. Because of this false story, people actually beleived the crowd booed when there is overwhelming evidence it did not happen.
I don't see ths story on Drudge at all. ?????
" SMD, try listening to the audio and watching the video. There are no boos."
If you had a clue, you'd realize that a microphone could be ten feet away from people booing and not pick it up. The video proves nothing, because it doesn't establish where the mikes are and if they were omnidirectional or unidirectional.
"You're dishonest and a partisan hack (I've read your writing, time to grow up). You have no credibility because you refuse the truth."
Funny, that's what I say about you and your kind; I'm not surprised you ripped-off my material, though. You Reugnicans are better at destroying than creating, so you have steal from others.
You people simply don't have the facts on your side. Give it up.
Where did the Left I admired go? So far, the only arguments against this story are of the following variety:
A) No attempt to refute the facts of the story.
B) Followed by an argument that the real "liar" is Bush.
C) Implying that since liberals today are the "good" guys, nothing else matters.
D) Which means the ends justify the means and anything goes if it will support your beliefs.
And. In one fell swoop. The argument against Bush's WMD "lies" goes out the windwo. Since, as any good lefty will tell you, truth is subjective in a postmodern world, the existence or non-existence of WMDs is irrelevant, all that matters is how Bush felt about it. And since we've established that the ends justify the means, Bush can lie if he wants too, since from his perspective he's the "good" guy.
If you attack Bush because you believe he lies, then you must take a stand against all lying. Do you want want to remove liars from office? Or just Bush (but will accept another liar or using lies to do it)? I just want a straight answer.
I just want to add whatever background I can. I worked for United Press International in the 1980s. A wire service, by design, is the least likely in the media to twist a story for political reasons.
Remember the AP has about 1600 newspaper clients, each if which has a different perspectice. So to increase business a wire service needs to aboid angering any of its clients. So it writes its stories right down the middle, by a strict "inverted pyramid" formula. Some call it assembly line journalism.
It there was an inaccuracy, I suspect the reporter is in considerable trouble. The AP is notoriously political to work for and one can turn from a rising star to a falling one very quickly.
So the reporter wants to avoid saying anything that might offend a client.
My guess is that some clients were angered and demanded that this section of the article be removed. So the AP did it.
THAT is bad journalism. The content of a story should not be controlled by the number of people who call in to complain or the stories will turn out more like political polls than independent journalism.
The reporter, I doubt, would lie. His proverial ass is on the line. Remember, for the editor, if there is a reporter making things up, he is likely to do it once too often and get a whole line of editors in trouble.
I haven't seen anyone giving the AP credit for quickly amending its story. I suspect if enough people were calling in, the editor of the story said, 'Hey, there may be something wrong here. Let's hold til until it can be further confirmed.
I just wanted to add a it about how a wire service works. Its clients are of all different political persuasions and it is understood to play things down the middle.
Did the reporter lie? Maybe, but I doubt it. It takes years to get to the AP, and if he had a habit of spining yarns he would have seen his career plummet before he ever got that high.
I haven't seen any credit given to the AP for amending its story. It reacted to claims of bias relatively quickly.
I don't believe the Drudge recording. He is a political partisan and is the lease likely to refrain from editing an audiotape. I'd prefer to see televised covrage of the speech by a major news outlet, and that must exist.
Finally, if I had to chose between the Drudge report and the AP for unbiased reporting I wouldn't pick Drudge. He has an Axe to grind, I'll avoid that source and go with the one that doesn't. In my decade at UPI I was never pressured to tilt a story in any direction.
America's biggest complaint about the meia should be the "iof it bleeds it ledes" syndrom. That takes away the info we need to play our part in a democracy and replaces it with entertainment.
Read carefully. I didn't say this reporter was not guilty of falsifying something. I suspect he heard boos in his section of the crowd and became indignant.
I an just tying to explain how wie services work, since I've been there. I'll discuss this with anyone who wants to talk further. But if you're just going to call me names... well, I just want people to write who really want to communicate. I have a special account at 2175@mytrashmail.com.
A lot of times, having a good idea how the media operates can chane minds - both ways.
Bernie
I posted a note explaining how a wire service operates elswhere in response to comments made here. I worked a decade in NYC, reporting on and eiting many stories. Before judgements are made, it is best if the way a particular media outfit opeerates.
With a wire service there is, literaly, a deadline every minute, and stories are very frequently modified as time goes on. A later crew updadates the story for the other half of the cycle. One cycle is for the AMs and the pther are for the afternoon papers. Changes alone are no indcation of bias.
I really believe that there are people on both sides of the bench who would express sadness at the illness of another human being. Many - the hotheads - would express pleasure. I'm sure both kinds of people had representatives in the crowd. So my guess is that he heard boos in his part of the audince and became indignant.
Unless the boos played a major role in the event, I would place it lower in the story. But it couldn't be left out.Unless this reporterhas done things like ths before, in which case you reconsider he repoter's whole story.
But to think there is an editor ad a reporter out there chucking afterward that they had put another one over on the public, just isn't thinking.
Every career has its failures (10 percent?) and every career has its good employees (90 percent). Ho DO you weed these people out?
Changing a story just because of complaints on it is a bad practice. Then you have reporters who steer away from controversy when the shouldn't.
But it couldn't be left out.Unless this reporterhas done things like ths before, i which case you reconsider he repoter's whole story.
But to think there is an editor ad a reporter out there chucking after that they had put another one over on the public, you refrain from aaessing blame.

The issues are complicated. Thse looking for real solutions are going to find them hard to find. I can do my part, and if anyone want to listen, email me at 2175@myTrashMail.com

PS... The AP, as well as UPI when I was there, serves ewspapers of all political persuasion. The last thing it wants in its story is opinion. You don't want you anger a newspaper or radio station client, so you play everything right down the middle.
For this reason the pyramyd style of reporting is invented, in qhich with the placement of facts are always put in the same descending order of importence.
And if his "stuff doesn't read this way, he doesn't last long.
Before each sidein a partisan dispoute tears the media apart in a violent flash, let us first know how the media operates. A sraightforward understnding of that aspect of the media will answer many questions.
Americans' real enemy is the "if it bleeds it ledes" mentality. That replaces substance with entertainment. I await they day when I will see a white man cuffed and thrown into a police van because he car is polluting the atmosphere.
The answers are never simple. IF left and right are really to achieve anything, they must learn to work togeter in an asmosphere of mutual respect, ridding themselves of their hotheads.
Anythng less is a disservice to the majority - the people on both dides who simply want a better wold.
By the way, assuming the cheering did occur when it was announced Carter was was ill... these kind of people exist on both sides. Let's try to take the leap of faith and consider that someone like me may be right, but that I'll never intentionally mislead.. I can tell you how newspapers and wire services work. I'm using a different email server other than my private one to protect my system. But I can be wrong and will tell anyone point to the areas where I might be vulnrable.
Let's get a dialogue between the left, right and middle and find areas that we can agree on. Lets make the division be between the constructive and the uncostructive rather than pro-this or anti-that.
I will be at 2175@myTrashMailsite.com for the next few weeks. I just don't want anyone taking down my home system.
Lets talk, and start from the many areas left and right have in common. And lets keep the discussions civil.

In search of the best
Ask.com, Answers.com outperform more popular Web engines
Even as they become more savvy, the Internet's leading search engines still sometimes bog down in befuddlement when a specific kernel of knowledge is sought.
Hoping to fill the gap, Answers.com (from GuruNet Corp.) and Ask.com (from Ask Jeeves Inc.) have pledged to provide more adept responses to vexing but straightforward questions about history, science, geography, pop culture and sports.
Both search engines aim to provide a correct answer explicitly at the top of a search's first results page -- or with a highly placed link to a Web page that contains the information.
Their mission raises a question: Just how knowledgeable are these search engines?
To find out, I staged a very unscientific test consisting of questions culled from a recent edition of Trivial Pursuit.
My mock game pitted the avowed prowess of Answers.com and Ask.com against the Internet's most widely used search engines -- Google, Yahoo and Microsoft Corp.'s MSN.
The findings: Answers.com and Ask.com appear to be a small step ahead of Google and noticeably smarter than Yahoo and MSN when dealing with such esoteric questions as "What glass beads are created when a meteorite strikes the Earth's surface?"
Both Answers.com and Ask.com guided me to the correct answer (tektites) with the first link on the results page -- an aptitude that both sites displayed with 10 of the 20 questions posed in the theoretical game. When they didn't get the answer with the very first link in response to some questions, both search engines generally came through within the next two links.
Although they performed similarly in our game,-Answers.com and Ask.com rely on different formulas.
Answers.com relies on a combination of Google's search engine and human editors who have stoked its database with answers to frequently asked questions that they've obtained by poring through reference materials.
Ask.com, part of a Web family about to be acquired by e-commerce conglomerate InterActiveCorp for $2 billion, has devised a fully automated approach that fishes through the Internet's sea of information.
Although they are superior to the other search engines at this task, Answers.com and Ask.com rarely realized their ultimate goal -- making things as clear-cut as possible by summarizing the correct response at the very top of the results page so it wouldn't be necessary to click on a link and peruse another Web site.
Ask.com spit out a concise "Web answer" in just two of the 20 questions, while the only time that Answers.com delivered was when I sought the definition of "googol." (It's the number one followed by 100 zeros.)
Google, which drew its name from that mathematical term, fared reasonably well in the competition. The Internet's most popular search engine came up with the correct answer on the first link in eight of the 20 questions (including the one about tektites). That's something Yahoo did just five times and MSN only twice.
None of the sites was omniscient. Answers.com, Ask.com and Google each drew blanks on three questions (I considered it a miss if a link to the correct answer didn't appear within the first three pages of results). Yahoo and MSN each whiffed on six questions.
There was only one question that baffled all the search engines, "Who was the first Cuban defector to play in Major League Baseball?" Although they all contained references to him in their indexes, none of the search engines could figure out it was Rene Arocha, a pitcher who first signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in the early 1990s.
Though it lagged behind the other search engines in this competition, MSN looked brilliant on one question that stumped all the other search engines: What company was acquired in the biggest leveraged buy-out deal of all time? The first link on MSN's results page took me to a site that correctly listed RJR Nabisco.
The test also revealed the disadvantage of depending on search engines -- they sometimes point to sites with conflicting answers.
This occurred most frequently when I asked how many viewers watched the series finale of the TV show M*A*S*H. The search engines pointed to Web sites that variously listed the audience at anywhere from 105.9 million to nearly 125 million. Trivial Pursuit lists the answer as 121.6 million.
To paraphrase M*A*S*H's theme song, searching for online answers still isn't painless.
